Presentamos la exposición Urs Lüthi. More or less del artista conceptual suizo Urs Lüthi en su primera exposición individual en España basada en uno de sus temas de investigación fundamentales centrado en la identidad y su propia imagen.
Desde su primera presentación en público, en 1974, su cuerpo se convierte en el principal material de sus obras. Sus autorretratos, ambivalentes e irónicos, constituyen una reflexión en clave kitsch e ilusionista sobre el cuerpo, el tiempo y la vida. Su universo plástico se plantea como una personal interpretación del body art, y despliega un irónico juego psicológico entre el yo y el otro yo, lo masculino y lo femenino.
A partir de la experiencia autobiográfica, subjetiva, llega a una crítica social y existencial que abraza a toda la sociedad. Inspirado por Rrose Sèlavy de Duchamp, desarrolla el tema de la ambigüedad sexual y el mito del andrógino. Para Lüthi, el disfraz significa romper el tabú de la sexualidad, cruzar barreras de identidad y jugar con la relación entre realidad y ficción, asociadas en una referencia continua de significado. La subjetividad y la objetividad son conceptos relativos, lo que importa es poder visibilizar los innumerables aspectos bajo los cuales se manifiesta la realidad.
La investigación artística de Urs Lüthi se distingue por la notable agilidad con la que el artista se mueve en diferentes campos de expresión: fotografía, escultura, performance, serigrafía, video y pintura.
Entre sus obras más conocidas se encuentran las instalaciones Run for your life. Placebos and surrogates, que presenta en la Bienal de Venecia de 2001, y en las que la publicidad y el culto desmedido al cuerpo constituyen el tema central.

Urs Lüthi nace en Krienz, Lucerna (Suiza) en 1947. Vive y trabaja en Munich.
Lüthi asistió a la Escuela de Artes Aplicadas de Zúrich. Trabajó como profesor universitario en Kassel , Alemania y en 2009 le fue otorgado el premio Arnold-Bode-Preis.
Entre sus exposiciones puede mencionarse la del Kunstmuseum de Wiesbaden (1995), Urs Lüthi. Art is the better life. Tableaux 1970-2002 en el Musée Rath de Ginebra (2002). Entre sus exposiciones en España son de carácter colectivo como fueron Beautiful People, Centre d’Art la Panera, Lérida (2008); A batalla dos xéneros, CGAC – Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea, Santiago de Compostella (2007); LOOP´00 Barcelona (2003) y Le corps en scène, Institute Francais, Madrid (1994). Siendo en esta ocasión con Urs Lüthi. More or less la primera individual en Madrid.
Ha protagonizado numerosas exposiciones en importantes instituciones de todo el mundo, como pueden ser: Stedelijk Museum de Amsterdam; Kunsthaus de Zürich; Kunstmuseum de Winterthur; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Chicago; Centro Nacional de Arte y Cultura Georges Pompidou de París; Nationalgalerie y Neue Berliner Kunstverein de Berlín; Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon; Hara Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Tokio; Kunsthalle de Viena; Museo Ludwig de Budapest; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Santiago de Chile; Tate Modern de Londres; Palais de Tokio y Musée d’Orsay de París; Kunstmuseum de Lucerna; MARTA de Herford; Instituto de Arte Contemporáneo de Filadelfia; MAMC de Saint-Étienne; MAMCO de Ginebra; Parkview Museum de Singapur; Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana en Venecia y MOCA de Toronto.
Por otro lado, ha participado en eventos artísticos internacionales como: Trigon ’73, Graz (Austria, 1973); 13. Bienal de São Paulo (Brasil, 1975); Documenta 6, Kassel (Alemania, 1977); Sidney Biennale (Australia, 1978); II Internazionale Foto Triennale, Esslingen, (Alemania, 1992); Bienal de Seúl, (Corea, 1995); 49a Bienal de Venecia (Italia, 2001).

We present exhibition Urs Lüthi. More or less by Swiss conceptual artist Urs Lüthi in his first solo exhibition in Spain. It is based on one of his fundamental research topics, being focused on identity and self-image.
Since 1974, when the first public presentation took place, his body has become the main material for his artistic works. Ambivalent and ironic self-portraits constitute a kitsch and illusionist reflection on the body, time, and life. Moreover, his plastic universe is a personal interpretation of body art and displays an ironic psychological play between the self and the other self, the masculine and the feminine.
From autobiographical and subjective experience, he arrives to a social and existential critique embracing the whole of society. Inspired by Duchamp’s Rrose Sèlavy, he develops the theme of sexual ambiguity and androgynous myth. For Lüthi, disguise means breaking taboo of sexuality, crossing identity barriers, and playing with the relationship between reality and fiction, associated with a continuous reference of meaning. Subjectivity and objectivity are relative concepts. Thus, what matters is to be able to make visible the many aspects under which reality manifests itself.
The artistic research of Urs Lüthi is distinguished by the remarkable agility that set the basis of the artist in different fields of expression: photography, sculpture, performance, screen printing, video, and painting.
Among his best-known works are the installations Run for Your Life and Placebos and surrogates, which were presented at the Venice Biennale in 2001. In such works, the central items are advertising and excessive body cult.
“The foundation of my work is the human condition. My conception arose in the mid 1960’s. It is based on the conviction that one can only experience the world and understand it in a subjective way.
